It’s worth noting that Helmer, the father of Petterson, the mind behind the P1800, had previously invented the PV444.

Volvo sought a sports car to compete in the US and European markets, and the project was initiated in 1957 even though their last effort, the P1900, had only sold 68 units and had failed to take off. Helmer Petterson, a technical consultant for Volvo who had played a pivotal role in developing the Volvo PV444 in the 1940s, was the driving force behind the P1800 project. Little did he know that his son, Pelle, would complete the design work while working at the Italian automotive styling studio of Pietro Frua, a division of the renowned Carrozzeria Ghia. Volvo initially credited the design to Pietro Frua, the Italian designer, and it wasn’t until 2009 that they officially recognized Pelle Petterson’s authorship of the P1800’s composition. In December 1957, Helmer Petterson journeyed to the Karmann headquarters in Osnabrück, West Germany, with X1, the first hand-built P1800 prototype. His purpose was to explore the possibility of Karmann handling the tooling and production of the P1800.

The engine was a B18, meaning “Bensin” in Swedish, which stands for petrol, and “18” for 1800 cc displacement. It produced 75 kW of horsepower. This version, known as the B18B, had a different camshaft and a more excellent compression ratio than the somewhat less potent twin-carb B18D found in the modern Amazon 122S.



While some claim that the B18 engine was derived from the B36 V8 engine seen in Volvo trucks, others contest this claim due to the engines’ variances. The P1800 was equipped with a robust engine from the B18 that included five main crankshaft bearings. Until 1963, the B18 was mated to the new, more durable M40 manual gearbox. The M41 gearbox with electrically operated Laycock de Normanville overdrive was well-liked from 1963 until 1972.

Due to their numerically smaller differential, cars without overdrive could reach a top speed that was marginally greater than that of the more widely used overdrive models—just under 120 mph (193 km/h). That’s correct! The P1800’s introduction led to immediate interest from the press and automotive enthusiasts. While it may not have been the fastest GT car of its time, it garnered praise for its solid construction and attractive design. It quickly gained popularity, partly thanks to its competitive pricing. The availability of overdrive, while improving fuel efficiency and long-distance driving comfort, did pose a challenge for reaching the engine’s redline in top gear. The P1800’s blend of style, affordability, and overall appeal made it a unique offering in its era.



Thus, it should come as no surprise that the P1800 is swift—albeit not Porsche swift. It takes 4.8 seconds to accelerate from a halt to 60 mph, although it could have been faster if we had indeed been willing to abuse the vehicle. We didn’t try a full-on high-rpm clutch dump, but we found that launching from 5,000 rpm and feathering the clutch produced the best results.

The shifter moves in three straight lines as you go through the ratios rather than in an S-curve. You must respect the laws because this Hollinger five-speed racing gearbox was never intended for street driving. Cyan even had a specially synchronized gear set manufactured for it. Mastering the four-three downshift is far simpler than the upshift. With its clever and expertly constructed rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup, the Volvo P1800 personified the beauty of a bygone automotive era. The Volvo P1800’s RWD arrangement made every trip into a visually stunning performance where form and function coexisted harmoniously.



The P1800’s manual and automatic gearboxes are the same as those found in the 122 and 140 series of automobiles. They are readily available and incredibly sturdy. Like many other vehicles from this era, the P1800 is frequently seen with non-working overdrive systems. But recently, we’ve seen more cars with excellent overdrives than poor ones.
